Underwater Vote Installation at University of Miami Foote Green
October 12 @ 8:00 am - October 23 @ 5:00 pm
In collaboration with the University of Miami Student Government’s ECO Agency and Climate Reality Project club, UM Professor of Practice Xavier Cortada is creating an “Underwater Vote” installation on campus at UM’s Foote Green from October 12th – 23rd. Because of the pandemic, only people permitted to be on campus will be able to see this installation in person. Check out #underwatervote to see the installation on social media.
As the 2020 election quickly approaches, Xavier Cortada’s Underwater HOA is launching the “Underwater Vote Campaign” across Miami-Dade County. He launched the Underwater HOA in 2018 to make our vulnerability to rising seas impossible to ignore. Now, Cortada, who serves as Professor of Practice at the UM Department of Art and Art History, wants us to make sure we vote, not just thinking about our immediate needs but also the greater chaos to come unless those we elect into office equitably address our climate emergency.
Tell others to think about a future impacted by sea level rise when voting:
Step 1 – Download the Underwater Vote background and use it during Zoom calls (www.underwaterhoa.com)
Step 2 – Take a screenshot in front of your Underwater Vote background and share it on social media tagging #underwatervote
Step 3 – Research your candidates (what’s their climate plan?), start conversations with friends and family, and VOTE
All University organizations and clubs are encouraged to use the Zoom background during their meetings to foster conversations about the importance of voting as we lead up to election day. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to take pictures with the installation and post those images on social media with the tag #underwatervote.
